Antarctica Weather To Expect On Your Vacation
Antarctica weather is pretty easy to predict even if you know nothing about the climate there. Tomorrow will inevitably be cold, the only real question is just how cold it's going to be. And the answer to that is often found below the 0ºC (32ºF) level.
The average low temperature for a whole year at Deception Island (if you go an an Antarctic tour this is one of your destinations) which is considered to be mild and balmy in terms of Antarctica weather (measured over an 8 year period) is a chilly -5ºC (22ºF) and the average high for a year is really nothing to write home about either creeping up the thermometer to an underwhelming-1ºC (29ºF). The highest recorded temperature that you can look forward to there in a year is 10ºC (29ºF). Lowest Temperature EverSo this is not a place to visit if you don't like getting cold. Antarctica holds a number of worldwide records for its climate. It is the coldest, windiest, driest and iciest continent on the face of the earth. Talking about records, here is one to make the blood freeze in your veins...literally. The coldest day ever measured on earth was on July 21, 1983 at Vostok Station Antarctica: -89ºC (-129ºF).And what is the record highest temperature that you can look forward to? Don't pack away your winter woolies just yet: 15ºC (59ºF). If you are planning a trip here and you are from a warmer climate you might want to acclimatize beforehand by climbing into the icebox of your fridge at home. Seriously though, you won't have to worry about encountering record low temperatures because tourists may only visit Antarctica during the summer months between late November and March (take a look at the Antarctica weather chart below to see what to expect at that time at Deception Island). Best Times To VisitNovember is the best month to view the mating rituals between the seabirds and penguins. Landings are still pristine because the bulk of the tourists haven't arrived yet and the winter pack ice is starting to melt and break up.December and January are the warmest months and you have the added advantage of having about 20 hours of daylight which is great for sightseeing. This is peak tourist season and wildlife viewing is at its best with newly hatched penguin chicks in abundance. From mid February to March whale watching is at its best but Antarctica weather temperatures are already starting to drop further in preparation for the coming winter.
