My wife and I also love the great out doors and get out whenever we can. We are always looking for the next adventure and always telling everyone about our last one.
Our BC whale watching trips began as one trip to go sea kayaking. We joined a group through an outfitter to go on a short trip into an area north of Nootka Sound called Nuchatlitz.
We had a great time, the area was not very popular and is loaded with sea otters. These little creatures roll on their backs and eat a spiny sea creature called a Sea Urchin. The sea urchin is covered with spines so it is crazy that these things eat them.
We camped on stunning beaches, had fires the whole bit.
After that experience, the following year we booked a trip to go on a Johnstone Strait whale watching kayak trip to see an Orca or two. This trip surpassed the previous one for excitement and quality. We stumbled into a couple from Spain while we were in New York and they said they had done this trip with an outfitter and loved it.
We took their advice and booked with the same outfitter, and wow what an experience! The company (called Out For Adventure) was located on Quadra Island, north of Comox. These guys/girls were amazing, the detailed planning etc., just floored us and the paddling was great.
We saw Orcas, Eagles, Osprey, Minke Whales, one Humpback, and a few of our group saw a black bear on one of the mornings (we missed it).
We did an amazing hike and met some researchers that were perched on a hill, or should I say cliff facing the ocean looking for whales.
Each night but one we had a fire and ate some great camp food. In fact, it was far better food than we eat normally.
I'll tell you though, we were most impressed with this outfitter over any other we had found previously or since. We have taken two trips with them and each time it was great. Anyone looking to take any adventure trip out there, the real key is finding the right outfitter. The one we used here focuses on a lot of explaining what we were looking at and the guides had loads of stories about the plants and animals, it was truly moving, eye opening and life changing.
The ocean there is very clear, and there seems to be a lot of wildlife although most beaches are a little on the rocky side. As a matter of fact when the guide first pointed to a beach for us to land on we couldn't see it, it was just rocks to us. After we got used to it it was part of the charm of the area.
Mountains in the background and total isolation - especially at night. Amazing!
We also saw some humming birds, which really surprised us.
Oh yes, on one of the trips we stayed in large tents that looked like a cabin and slept on cots - wow talk about comfort. It was quite the feeling of sea kayaking in sunshine all day, feasting, enjoying conversation then retiring to our cot! Life can't get much better.
