What comes to mind first when someone mentions a great white shark?
Is it diving with sharks in their natural environment, like a number of other adventure enthusiasts?
Or is it images of a big grey predator with rows of sharp teeth, dorsal fin protruding out of the water, ready to attack the next available surfer?
I wouldn’t want to come across a great white by accident. As I mentioned, they do have rows and rows of sharp teeth.
Nevertheless, most people who have already went diving with sharks, find these animals exude power and grace rather than instilling fear.
Even people who were initially wary of diving with sharks, bubble over with enthusiasm and awe as soon as they remove their mouthpiece upon emerging from the water and the cage.
Australia's Rodney Fox invented the underwater cage after being attacked by a shark in the 1960's. Now divers and non-divers alike can safely view wild great white sharks up close and personal.
For years now, the most popular destinations to go shark cage diving have been Dyer Island (Gansbaai, South Africa) and the Neptune Islands near Adelaide, Australia. However, in recent years Isla Guadalupe in Mexican waters has surfaced as another top destination offering crystal clear waters for most of the year.
To form an objective view of what it’s really like to have only a few metal bars between yourself and an animal capable of biting you in half, read on.
You don’t have to search all over the net to find reviews by people who've gone diving with sharks in the past. I have extracted the highlights of previous divers' trip reports below.

Diving with sharks can be quite a scary adventure, from a rough ride out at sea to being confined to the cage while great whites circle around you.
Gansbaai is situated more or less 180km outside Cape Town. The Irvings found a transport service that would take them from Cape Town directly to their destination during a fairly quick internet search. Once there they were shown video containing appropriate conduct to ensure safety while out with the sharks and then they boarded for their boat ride to Sea Island.
Blake writes that although this truly marks the experience of a lifetime, it can be quite dangerous depending on the conditions out at sea and encourages potential cage divers to make sure they feel entirely safe with the circumstances before venturing out, especially after the incident where a boat was capsized in the area only a short while after they were there…

When the skipper called for the first passenger to enter the cage, Pamela volunteered. Since there are no snorkels involved when cage diving with sharks, it is a matter of holding one's breath for as long as possible, and she did just that when she saw the 3.5m female swimming around the cage.
They also saw some young sharks, roughly 2m in length, not quite as large as the grown great whites but equally impressive.
It was the experience of seeing these sharks in their watery home that got to Pamela and she is of the opinion that they were just as curious about the divers as the divers were about them.
She says that they had a nice small lunch on the boat before another round of dives, this time being visited by a male no less than 4.5m in length. The sheer size of this great white dazzled her, making the day truly astounding and unforgettable...

John recommends that everyone rather go diving with sharks in their natural environment than to go and view them in captivity. That's one way you can contribute to this apex predator's conservation.
During his visit to South Africa, he and his 10-year old daughter went cage diving at Gansbaai as well as False Bay and saw plenty of great whites. He compares the two areas and gives great feedback in general about what the whole experience is really like.

Chris writes that on the day they went out with Great White Adventures, it was raining so much that none of the other operators were going out, cancelling all but their group's dive since their skipper was not fazed by the weather.
The cage was big enough to comfortably accommodate five people without leaving anyone short of a viewing point. A tuna head was used to lure the sharks to the cage, along with what basically consists of seal defecation to further tickle the scent senses of the great whites.
Chris was not entirely chuffed with the experience because after nearly two hours of acclimatising to the sharks and enjoying their sight, a four metre great white swam right at the cage, hitting Chris in the head with the tip of its nose while he was wondering where to position his feet. After this scary incident he got out while Becs and Sarah remained caged, enjoying the experience to the full…

Alison and her family were more than a little excited at the prospect of diving with sharks and experiencing the sight of a great white in such close proximity. She made arrangements with UnrealDive prior to leaving for South Africa and was guaranteed a bunch of necessities that simply did not materialise.
Wanting to take photos under water Alison requested air supply for their trip, this was never provided; she were also promised that only eight passengers are allowed onboard per dive excursion and that one can go back to the cage for more than one viewing per trip. Much to their dismay, the boat was crammed with eighteen visitors on their trip and there was not enough time for more than one viewing per group of four since the boat had another trip to rush back to shore for.
Alison writes that although the outing truly was an amazing and exciting experience it was near impossible to take good photographs while being expected to hold her breath under water and that she was quite disgruntled with UnrealDive's inability to deliver as per agreement…

John and Marinda saw ten great whites during their diving with sharks visit to the freezing waters of Shark Alley (at Dyer Island) where the slick sea predators come to feed on seals.
A handy tip is to focus holding onto the bar inside the cage and not the cage itself. When a 12 foot great white shark swims up to the cage you don't want to give him anything to bite into!

Jorrin made use of the operator's bus transfer service between Cape Town and Gansbaai to join them for a wonderful day out, diving with sharks. The tour included breakfast before and lunch after the cage diving.
Once out at sea near Dyer Island, the group waited around for about 2-3 hours in good weather before the first shark, small at 2.5m, made its appearance.
Jorrin was lucky to be among the first four people in the cage to watch a larger great white shark from under water. He found it a very special moment when the grey beauty swam past within less than 2m from the cage. They saw 3 great whites in total.

Robert has a genuine love for sharks which is contagious.
Mike experienced awe and admiration, rather than fear and panic, for the giant beasts which move through the water with power and grace.
First he saw a large shark from the deck as it circled the boat. From the cage he saw a baby great white (about 2m) which like most baby animals was energetic and playful. They saw other sharks too, appearing and disappearing from the blue, passing close to the cage.
Diving with sharks and subsequently seeing a great white in its natural habitat, its large mouth lined with rows of jagged teeth, as he passed within a foot of the cage was a sight he will not forget...

September 2003 LeovilleSource: Fodor's Forum |
Leoville decided at the last minute to go shark cage diving rather than whale watching and it was therefore arranged that they be transferred at sea. There was a very large great white directly between the boats when they had to hop across the small gap... unnerving!
Shortly thereafter more than 10 sharks approached the boat, lured by the fish bait. It was amazing and he got to take a few good pictures.
Seeing the graceful sharks under water turned out to be the highlight of the excursion. Three large ones came directly up to the cage and tried to chew on it.
The operator is recommended for their diving with sharks expertise as well as the size and structure of the boat and cage.
He recommends the guest house for its great breakfasts and close amenity to the town of Hermanus. Being whale season, they also saw many whales right from the deck of their large room (rooms #1 and #2 have ocean views).
Restaurants visited in Hermanus were the casual Ocean Basket with good food at great prices, frequented by locals and Burgandy's - a more upscale restaurant and very pleasant experience...

When it was Duncan and Kristen's turn to finally enjoy diving with sharks, they sat down in the cage using regulators and watching the sharks swim around the boat. They were amazed to see large ones of about 4.5m long within about 3m from their faces.

Rob thought it was exhilarating to see the sharks from the boat, but when he got in the cage he realised that diving with sharks was the ultimate. They were beautiful, powerful and graceful ... he couldn't find words to describe his feelings when viewing that first great white.
The visibility in the Cape waters was about 8-10 metres.
White Shark Diving arranges that each person wishing to part take in the diving with sharks get about 3 sessions of 20 minutes each, increasing the possibility of any one person seeing a few different sharks.
The crew attract the sharks to the boat with bait and Coenie would control the movements of the sharks with it - either luring them closer to the cage or letting the shark get hold of it and have a bit of a fight, causing a lot of splashing water and action.
The hosts Alet and Gerhard at the B&B accommodation in De Kelders were extremely helpful and very nice...

This was Christie's third time diving with Shark Diver and she was pleasantly surprised by the extent to which this last trip of hers outshone all her previous experiences diving with sharks.
On their way to the diving point, they saw a pod of at least fifty pilot whales swimming around their boat and following them along for a while. In her opinion this was a sign of good things to come.
The first shark was within sight even before their cage was set up for the first dive, and every single dive made for excitement and thrill enough to stand in disbelief. It is no surprise that she highly recommends getting into a cage to marvel at these great animals.
She reports that while every dive was worth it, with the great whites being completely unabashed in their bountiful appearance around the cage, one incident in particular stood out way above the rest. While in the cage she was called out to witness what was for the first time being captured on film in this area: a great white attacking a seal right in front of them...

I'd been dreaming of throwing myself in a cage surrounded by great whites since I saw my first documentary on a nascent cable station 20 years ago.
I couldn't have asked for a better diving with sharks experience. When I got seasick (the first time in my life, and I lived on a ship for three months), the CEO brought me water and food to my cabin. The galley catered to my vegetarian diet. And, best of all, I saw more fins and teeth in five days than I'd seen on that crappy cable program.
Our dive master, Luke, made everything run so smoothly that I never once was afraid, even when swells made getting into the cage quite tricky (especially when you're gracefully challenged, like myself). I got so close to great whites that had I been stupid enough to try, I could have reached out and petted them. The water at Isla Guadalupe has remarkable clarity, and you can spot the unmistakable outline of a white when it's still nearly 80 feet away. Watching a 16-footer glide inches below my feet was an experience I'll carry with me to my grave.

Seeing great whites in the wild has been a dream of Raffin's for a while. He tried diving with sharks at the Farallon Islands in 2005 which was a very disappointing experience.
However this trip to Guadalupe was the fulfillment of his dream.
The boat itself was great - hot showers, flush toilets and rooms with air-conditioning. There were a total of 20 people on board.
The crew was excellent, especially the chef who catered for Raffin's special dietary requirements as well as prepare a cake for a honeymoon couple.
Guests had the opportunity to cage dive for an hour at a time. The initial briefing was very thorough and Luke always put the safety of all guests first.
Raffin was blessed with great whites at each but one of his cage dives, and not just fleeting visits either. Views from the boat were also excellent. |

04 October 2005 Keith Flood, diver and professional photographer, USASource: Keith's Website |
Keith is a regular diver and therefore made the choice to go on a longer trip among the great white sharks to get the most out of the experience.
The first 3 days diving with sharks were a bit disappointing, but the last 2 days delivered a constant flow of different sharks, one of which was 14ft/4.2m long and full of scars.
The longer trip meant that one could really get to observe shark behaviour - ranging from easy gliding to crazy aggressive maneuvers to try and get a piece of the bait.
Great weather coupled with the water depth meant fantastic visibility (100ft/30m) from within the cage.
Keith learnt that a zoom lens is a must as you never know which direction the sharks will come from and which mackerel bait they will go after.
The trip was well organised and the boat was comfortable - each person had their own bunk room and sufficient storage facilities (photographers will know!)...

Everyone in Eric's group who signed up to go diving with sharks, were photographers or videographers.
The Searcher's cage design was great and could withstand rougher seas than some of the other boats he saw.
He loved being in the lower cage or "Chum Bucket", where one is always accompanied by a safety diver, as you get to see the sharks on (or even below) their level.
Highlights were when a great white came out of nowhere and hit the cage right where Eric and Jimmy's cameras were sticking out of the bars. Also seeing the sometimes very fat sharks approaching the cage from deep water and aiming their toothy grins directly at the divers...

Great White Adventures has an excellent operation; the guides and boat crew make a great team. The delicious gourmet food deserves mention here, plus unlimited beer and wine after dives.
They used the time between cage dives for fishing and downloading and editing photo and video material onto CDs.
The Searcher is actually a fishing boat but when it's used for diving with sharks trips, a maximum of 16 passengers is allowed. The cages are well built and very large, holding up to 8 divers.
Cindi sums up the trip as incredibly fun, wild, adrenaline pumping and exhilarating...

Sometimes they passed within touching distance, staring almost through him. He could see fine details of the scars on their skins and of course a multitude of sharp teeth.

Led by Rodney Fox, who after suffering a great white attack became so intrigued with the animal that he dedicated his life to tracking them, Christina and Mike boarded Princess II with much excitement and anticipation.
They saw dolphins and snorkelled with Australian sea lions until dusk on the first day, when it was time for the first cage dive to commence. They saw nine different great whites over the three days and she says that one is so amazed by the sight of the sharks that the cold water and the rocking of the cage does not even register upon viewing a great white up close.
The trip in its entirety was very educational and highly enjoyable, the food was good; for her and Mike it has sparked a new fascination with diving all together and Rodney's fascinating accounts of his encounters with sharks made it all the more interesting…

Bob chose to dive with sharks under Rodney Fox, the cage diving founder and was pleased to join a tourist group led by another underwater pioneer, Stan Waterman. Both Rodney and Stan gave some entertaining talks in the evenings. Also on board was marine biologist Rachel Powel, adding to the experience with her research findings presentation.
The group on board the Falie, an old boat still operating with an open wheelhouse, comprised of 14 passengers, 9 crew and the tour guides.
The first great white Bob saw when diving with sharks was more than 4m long and passed within 3m of him sitting in the bottom cage. The cage was lowered to a 17m depth and viz was about 10m.
He was awe inspired, excited and fascinated at the sight of this submarine-like predator. They were so close he could see their scars and practically feel their power.
This trip was the highlight of Bob's diving career; a realisation of a lifetime dream with the added bonus of doing so in the company of two of his original heroes, Rodney and Stan...
