Madagascar Island Hopping Review

Mark Dayton from South Africa and a bunch of his family went on an island hopping holiday in Madagascar in November 2007. He shares with us a bit more about it in this review:

I travelled with Jenman Safaris to Madagascar last year (2007) in November. It was my dad's 60th birthday and we travelled with a whole bunch of people between 25 and 70 years old!

This destination really has something to offer for everyone. Unfortunately we weren't able to see a lot of the inland but I am definitely planning to go back.

We went to the biggest island in the North of Madagascar - Nosy Be. From here we boarded Jenman's dhow to go island hopping! What a perfect holiday!

We were lucky enough that the skipper took us all the way down to Kalakajor (not sure about the spelling) island, where I believe Jenman was planning to build a fishing camp. It so great to know that we've been there before anything was on that island.

You get there after a long day on the big dhow which has comfortable cushions and a shady area to relax. The staff is brilliant and serves the best food out, all prepared by a brilliant cook (sorry, forgot her name) in a tiny kitchen.

The weather was rainy in the beginning but then cleared up and we were motoring through deep blue water past many little islands and even caught some nice fish on the way for dinner.

Once we arrived at our first island we felt like in a Bacardi TV-ad. White sandy beach, loads of palmtrees and no-one around. The next three days we spent exploring this remote island, snorkelling in the turquoise blue sea and going fishing.

On our way back we stopped at Iranja Island! The photos I took from here are just amazing, the colours of the sea and this island which consists of two islands and you can walk from one to the other on low tide over a sand bank for a different kind of island hopping!

Madagascar is really an adventure destination and you need to book with someone who knows what they are talking about. We got a lot of good advice about mosquitos, taking hand desinfecting handwash, etc.

The transfers and taxis where quite chaotic island style, but everything went well.

The last two nights we spent at Sakatia Lodge - exactly what we needed after this adventure. A beautiful lodge with a well stocked bar and lots of activity on offer. The owners Jose and his wife are really nice people and made us all feel very welcome!
