Choosing A Madagascar Hotel

Finding a Madagascar hotel as unique and pleasant as the country itself, is not an easy task. You might find one that looks great on paper but once you get there, it doesn't exactly do what it says on the tin.

Madagascar Holidays Rank # 10

  • All the top adventure tours rankings
  • Madagascar hotel and trip reviews
  • Madagascar animals
  • Madagascar climate - When to go
  • I have read masses of recent trip reports, reviews, forum posts and articles on Madagascar. As a result, I was able to compile this list of five top hotels.

Thanks to other travellers who have already tried and tested the hotels, you don't have to book your accommodation blindly.

Each Madagascar hotel that made the list was highly recommended by travellers like you and I, but who have already been there, done that and watched the Madagascar wildlife from their hotel veranda.

    Top Five Madagascar Hotel Choices

So, without further ado, here they are in no particular order:

    1. Hôtel Colbert - Antananarivo Madagascar

A luxury hotel in the centre of Tana offering great views of the city, a range of great health and fitness facilities, satellite TV, 24hr room service, a decent restaurant, business centre with secure high speed internet access ... everything you'd expect from an international 4-star hotel.

    2. L'Hôtel Anjajavy - 120km north of Mahajanga (Majunga), Madagascar West Coast

Most people who stay at L'Hôtel Anjajavy don't want to leave. It is remote and only reachable by small plane. From the hotel you can explore the diverse area by foot or boat or go snorkelling. Alternatively just sit by the pool, on the beach or on the veranda of your comfortable yet luxurious wooden villa and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Sifaka lemurs are regular visitors to the hotel grounds. The staff is fantastic and professional and the food delicious. This Madagascar hotel is actively involved with community and conservation projects - another good reason to support them.

    3. Hôtel Vakôna Forest Lodge - near Analamazoatra (Périnet) Special Reserve

Beautifully situated in the forest where you can go horse riding, canoeing or walking. Although it is not luxurious, it's comfortable and good value for money. Most people find that the best thing about the rustic Vakôna Forest Lodge is its location: it's only 10km from the main entrance to Périnet, where you can see the Indri lemur and hear its unique cry.

    4. Chanty Beach Hotel - Nosy Bé

A small but personal Madagascar hotel, far from the tourist rush. Ideal if you like a quiet and serene location, right on the beach. The owner is originally from Germany but has lived in Madagascar for more than 25 years. He and his wife provide personal attention and speak English too. You can cater for yourself or enjoy the excellent food from the restaurant.

    5. Hotel Lakana - Ile Ste-Marie

A beautifully located seaside hotel ... in fact, some of the romantic bungalows are in the water (on stilts). Previous travellers found the friendly (French) owner to be very visitor oriented, so your every need is met. Some describe the Lakana as "heavenly", others as "paradise" ... where you are welcomed with a drink.
